The Burlington Hosts Launch of Dementia Friendly Spelthorne

In the heart of Spelthorne, a significant step forward was taken in the journey towards a more compassionate and understanding community. The Burlington, a respected care home and an active member of Dementia Friendly Spelthorne, recently played host to an event that marked the launch of this vital initiative.

On Tuesday, February 6th, The Burlington welcomed over 30 attendees representing local charities and businesses, all united in their commitment to raising awareness and support for dementia within the community. Among the notable guests was the Mayor of Spelthorne, Cllr Denise Saliagopoulos, whose presence underscored the importance of the occasion.

Central to the Dementia Friendly Spelthorne initiative is the Dementia Friendly Pledge—an invitation extended to all organisations, big and small, to pledge their support and undertake three vital actions including:

  • Education: Ensuring at least 50% of staff or volunteers attend a Dementia Friends Workshop, equipping them with invaluable insights and empathy.
  • Engagement: Hosting, organizing, or sponsoring at least one dementia-related event in 2024, fostering dialogue and understanding within the community.
  • Environment: Installing dementia-friendly signage, a tangible symbol of our commitment to inclusivity and support.

During the event, Kelly Johns, Dementia Care Coordinator at The Burlington, delivered a poignant address on the significance of understanding dementia. "In our collective journey towards compassionate care, knowledge serves as our guiding light," she emphasised. "By fostering understanding, we lay the foundation for a community that truly embraces and supports individuals living with dementia."

Annette Pointon, General Manager of the Cameo Day Centre in Sunbury, further emphasized the essential role of dementia services in providing holistic support to those affected and their families.

Reflecting on the success of the event, Kirsty Ford, Admissions Manager of The Burlington and a key organiser of the initiative, expressed gratitude for the overwhelming support received. "The turnout and enthusiasm witnessed tonight reaffirm the importance of Dementia Friendly Spelthorne," she remarked. "Every pledge made, every conversation sparked, brings us closer to our vision of a community that is truly inclusive and supportive."

Beyond hosting this impactful event, The Burlington remains committed to leading by example. Through active participation in the Dementia Friendly Pledge and ongoing community engagement, The Burlington strives to contribute to the creation of a nurturing environment where individuals living with dementia are embraced and supported.
