Brampton Manor Resident Peter Powney-Jones Receives Prestigious Nuclear Test Medal

Brampton Manor, Boutique Care Homes' distinguished care home nestled in the heart of Newmarket, Suffolk, proudly celebrates the commendable recognition bestowed upon one of its cherished residents, Peter Powney-Jones. On the 19th of April 2024, Mr. Powney-Jones was presented with the esteemed Nuclear Test Medal, a symbol of gratitude and recognition for his invaluable service to the nation.

The Nuclear Test Medal holds profound significance, honouring the contributions of veterans and civilians who participated in the British nuclear testing program between 1952 and 1967. Mr. Powney-Jones' steadfast dedication during this pivotal period in history has left an indelible mark on our nation's safety, freedom, and way of life.

John Gilmour, Chair of the Dunstable, Leighton Buzzard, and Luton Branch of the Royal Air Forces Association, had the privilege of presenting the Nuclear Test Medal to Mr. Powney-Jones. The ceremony, held at Brampton Manor, was attended by members of Mr. Powney-Jones' family, who joined in celebrating this momentous occasion with afternoon tea.

Speaking after the event, Samantha Gardiner, Peter’s niece said “It was an honour and a delight for my family, as cousins of Peter, to be a part of his medal presentation. I know how proud of Peter his mum, Nelly; father, Harold; brother, John; and sister, Thérèse would have been if they could have seen Peter receive his medal.”

Akhi Goswami, Home Manager at Brampton Manor, expressed heartfelt gratitude, stating, "It was an honour for our team at Brampton Manor to witness such a significant ceremony. We are immensely thankful for Peter's service and proud to be part of a community that values and commemorates the sacrifices made by individuals like him."

Speaking at the unveiling of the Nuclear Test Medal in November 2022, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak aptly encapsulated the sentiment behind the medal, stating, "I am incredibly proud that we are able to mark the service and dedication of our nuclear test veterans with this new medal. Their commitment and service have preserved peace for the past 70 years, and it is only right their contribution to our safety, freedom, and way of life is appropriately recognised with this honour."
