Brampton Manor Grows Its U3A Partnership, One Plant at a Time
There is a certain kind of conversation that only happens over soil and seeds. On Wednesday 6th May, Brampton Manor welcomed members of the local U3A gardening club to the home’s gardens, and what unfolded was less a visit and more a meeting of minds.
The U3A has been a familiar and much-loved presence at Brampton Manor for many years, running regular activities alongside residents. This spring, knowing the home already had its own thriving gardening club, they brought something new: their gardeners. The two groups paired up naturally, and within minutes the talk had moved from plants to memories, to the gardens residents had kept over decades, to the particular joy of watching something you planted come back year after year.
“What struck me was how quickly the formalities disappeared,” said Valda, Head of Lifestyle and Wellbeing at Brampton Manor. “These ladies weren’t visitors and residents. They were just gardeners, talking about gardening. That kind of connection is exactly what we’re here to create.”
For many residents, the garden holds a deep personal history. Tending to outdoor spaces is tied to homes they have lived in, families they have raised, and routines that shaped their lives. Sitting alongside U3A members who shared the same relationship with the outdoors gave those memories somewhere to go.
“One of our residents started talking about the roses she grew in her last home, and the U3A lady sitting with her just lit up,” Valda added. “They were swapping tips, sharing stories. The garden has this way of bringing people back to themselves, and when you see that happen in real time, it never gets old.”
The visit is part of an ongoing and expanding relationship between Brampton Manor and the U3A, whose various groups bring structure, familiarity and fresh company to residents throughout the year. Gardening sits firmly within Boutique Care Homes’ Life Enrichment Programme, which supports resident wellbeing across six principles: Connect, Grow, Reflect, Feel, Move and Contribute.
“Our residents look forward to the U3A coming,” said Valda. “There’s a real excitement when a familiar group walks through the door. And when that group shares the same passions our residents already have, it stops feeling like an activity and starts feeling like a friendship.”
