Schoolchildren Bring World Puzzle Day Magic to The Burlington
Residents at The Burlington Care Home in Shepperton experienced the joy of intergenerational connection when pupils from Saxon Primary School in Shepperton visited to mark World Puzzle Day.
The heartwarming day saw children and residents working together on puzzles, with the room filled with laughter, teamwork, and meaningful connections spanning multiple generations. The activity is part of The Burlington’s ongoing commitment to bringing together young and old through its comprehensive Life Enrichment Programme.
The benefits of intergenerational activities for older people are well-documented, including significant improvements in mental health and emotional wellbeing, reduced social isolation, enhanced cognitive function, and increased physical activity. Research shows that care home residents who regularly take part in intergenerational activities with children burn an average of 20% more calories per week and often perform better on memory tests.
Sarah, Head of Lifestyle and Wellbeing at The Burlington, describes watching residents light up when the children arrive as truly special. “These intergenerational sessions create genuine moments of joy and connection that benefit everyone involved,” she explains. “The children bring such energy and curiosity, whilst our residents share their wisdom, patience, and warmth. Events like World Puzzle Day give us the perfect opportunity to bring generations together through shared activities that stimulate minds and hearts alike.”
For Home Manager Margie, the partnership with Saxon Primary School has become an integral part of life at The Burlington. “These visits aren’t just nice to have – they’re transformative for our residents’ wellbeing,” she says. “We see improvements in mood, engagement, and sense of purpose. The relationships formed during these sessions often continue beyond the activities themselves, creating lasting bonds that enrich our community. This is exactly what our family-centred approach to care is all about.”
The Burlington has established a strong relationship with Saxon Primary School, with regular visits that complement the home’s holistic approach to resident wellbeing. Based on six principles, Contribute, Grow, Reflect, Feel, Move, and Connect, The Burlington’s Life Enrichment Programme offers diverse activities designed to nurture residents’ minds, bodies, and spirits.
