The Burlington Celebrates World Book Day with Saxon Primary School

Residents at The Burlington enjoy World Book Day celebrations with Saxon Primary School children sharing favourite books and creating special memories.

Residents at The Burlington enjoyed an afternoon of stories and intergenerational connection yesterday as pupils from Saxon Primary School visited the care home to celebrate World Book Day.

Dressed as beloved characters, from Alice in Wonderland to The Cat in the Hat, children transformed the Piano Bar into a reading haven, sharing their favourite books with residents and sparking conversations, memories, and smiles.

World Book Day, celebrated annually across the UK and Ireland since 1997, promotes reading for pleasure and aims to change lives through the power of books. This year’s celebration at The Burlington brought that mission to life by connecting young readers with older generations through shared storytelling.

Building Bridges Between Generations

The event highlighted the significant benefits of intergenerational engagement for both age groups. For residents, interactions with children provide emotional stimulation, reduce isolation, and often trigger treasured memories. Hearing young voices and sharing stories creates moments of joy that contribute directly to mental and emotional wellbeing.

For the children, the experience develops empathy, patience, and communication skills that can’t be taught in traditional classroom settings. Reading aloud builds confidence, reinforces literacy, and gives young people a sense of purpose, knowing their presence brings happiness to others.

Margie Gonzaga, Home Manager at The Burlington, said: “This was one of those special days where you could feel the warmth in every corner of the home. Watching the children read to our residents—some sitting side by side, completely absorbed in a story, reminded me why we do what we do. You could see residents who are sometimes quite reserved really opening up and engaging in ways that were beautiful to witness.”

For many residents, the visit stirred cherished memories. Tom Stubbs OBE shared “It brought back a lot of memories when my children were younger reading books to them”

Sarah, Head of Activities and Wellbeing, added: “Events like this show the real power of intergenerational activities. The children were brilliant, so confident and caring. And our residents were absolutely glowing afterwards. Several told me it was the highlight of their week. What’s wonderful is that both groups benefit enormously. The children develop their reading confidence and gain understanding of aging and care, while our residents get the energy and fresh perspectives that only children can bring.”

The afternoon featured classic children’s literature from authors including Roald Dahl and Julia Donaldson, with residents and children discussing favourite characters and memories associated with the books.

The celebration is part of Boutique Care Homes’ Life Enrichment Programme, built around six wellbeing principles including ‘Connect’, which recognises that meaningful relationships and social engagement are fundamental to quality of life.

The partnership between The Burlington and Saxon Primary School continues to grow, with more collaborative events planned throughout the year.
