101 Years Celebrated at Brampton Manor
Brampton Manor by Boutique Care Homes, situated in Newmarket, Suffolk, has celebrated resident Reg Howard’s 101st birthday, with a day that started with his family and ended in a karaoke party the whole home turned out for.
Reg spent the early part of his birthday out at lunch with his family, including Melissa. It was only once he came back through the doors at Brampton Manor that the real surprise began: a karaoke afternoon, complete with cake and speeches, that the team had put together for him.
Coming home to it clearly meant something. “The other day I went out with Melissa and when I returned it was the first time I felt that I really had returned to my home,” Reg said.
He wasn’t speaking in the abstract. Reg moved to Brampton Manor after four years living alone, a stretch he describes plainly: too many lonely mornings and evenings, too much shopping and cooking to manage by himself. Settling in wasn’t instant, but it didn’t take long before the home began to feel less like a new address and more like somewhere he belonged.
“It felt everybody was so kind and welcoming and I began to feel that I belonged here for the first time,” he said. “I’m glad I did. I’ve met so many nice people.”
One of those people is Sally. Since he arrived, the two have become firm friends, down to a particular chair Reg has started claiming as his own whenever he sits with her. “She and I have struck up a sort of partnership, if you like,” he said. “She and I are good for each other.” He speaks just as warmly of the staff: “The staff couldn’t do much more for me than they do. They’re always there. I don’t have to worry.”
Valda, Brampton Manor’s Head of Lifestyle and Wellbeing, was among those marking the day with him. “Very, very happy birthday to you,” she said. “We are very happy to have you here. I’m glad we’ve made this your home, and I hope that feels the same for all of you. If we’ve made it feel like home, then we’re succeeding.”
By the end of the afternoon, cake eaten and speeches made, Reg summed up the past months in his own words: “I’ve done a lot of laughing. I found everything is fun now. I don’t have to worry about anything. It’s all done. So thank you very much everybody, whoever is concerned. It’s been a pleasure so far and it’s a new way of life for me, and it’s home.”
That is the measure Boutique Care Homes sets for itself: not rooms and routines, but a place residents come to call home, in their own words and their own time. Reg Howard’s 101st birthday was a celebration of a life well lived, and of a community that made room for one more person to belong in it.
