The Carers Hub: Citizens Advice Drop In at The Burlington

Unpaid carers in Shepperton, Surrey can get free, confidential advice on benefits, debt, energy and care funding at The Burlington's drop-in on 29 October.

Caring for a family member is a full-time job that rarely comes with a day off, and it’s one that often leaves carers themselves short of support, time, and information about what help they’re entitled to. On Thursday 29th October, The Burlington in Shepperton is opening its doors to change that, if only for a morning.

Between 10am and 12pm, Citizens Advice adviser Georgia will be on hand at the home for a free, confidential drop-in session. There’s no appointment necessary. Carers can simply come in, take a seat, and talk through whatever’s on their mind over a cup of tea and some refreshments.

Why This Matters for Carers

Unpaid carers are frequently the last people to ask for help, even though they’re often the ones holding a family’s care arrangements together. Many don’t know what welfare benefits they might be owed, how to approach mounting debt, or where to turn for energy advice as bills rise. Others are trying to navigate social care funding for a loved one with little idea of where to start. Georgia’s role on the day is to cut through that uncertainty and point carers towards the income maximisation and support options available to them, in plain terms, with no jargon and no pressure.

“So much of what we do here is about supporting our residents, but carers need looking after too,” says Margielyn Gonzaga, Home Manager at The Burlington. “Many of the people caring for a loved one at home are stretched thin and don’t get anywhere near enough support themselves. We wanted to bring that support to them, somewhere familiar, without them having to chase it down.”
